Who is using virtual meetings?

This may be attributed to the fact that smaller companies adapt to change quicker and are more willing to try new things, whereas larger organizations are reluctant to do so.
 

This sentence feels wrong. Is there a source for that? Even if it's the source listed after the following sentence, it's outdated by now. Recession changes everything! :) —Jerry

* An overall grammar/spell check is needed.

* Overall formatting is needed to clearly distinguish headings vs. sub-headings / adjust font size & type

* Spell out first use of any acronyms (i.e LAN/WAN in the "Cost-Saving iniatives)

Expanding Work Environments Section

* I assume that this section should include reasons for expanding the work environment. If so, this section could contain some additional key reasons for expanding the work environment.

* It's a little difficult to identify the structure of this section. Is Cost Saving Initiatives a sub category of Expanding Work Environments? Or is it a separate section? If it's a sub section then the intro paragraph should list out the various sub sections (similar to sections "Cultural & Intercultural Differences" , "Communication Style", and "Behavioral Differences"

Communication Style Section
The intro paragraph needs more content…perhaps highlighting the importance of communication style at a high level.

Cross Cultural Notes:
Remove entirely or add to or provide supporting examples in the Expanding Work Environment section.
In Cost-Saving Initiatives section provide more positive examples that virtual collaboration because it does not balance your negatives of the cost of virtual collaboration.
In Virtual Cross-Cultural Collaboration Issues section state the issues rather trying to quote them, very difficult to understand the issues.
In Cultural & Intercultural Differences section well formed and suggest no changes.
In Communication Style section well formed just remove or add to intro line under section title or move to the end of previous section.
In Behavioral Differences section well formed no changes, maybe put in bullet form? (Lots of good information)
In Team Dynamics section, I think there are a few more chemistry issues that affect team dynamics besides the two mentioned. The rest of the section is well formed no additional changes.
In Leadership & Management section well formed and suggest no changes.
In Vision: Clarity of Team Objectives section seems a little thin; I would also drop vision in the sections header. Maybe discuss the difference between Vision and Objectives?
All other sections under Cross-Cultural Virtual Collaboration Techniques are well formed and suggest no changes.
In the Cross-Cultural Virtual Collaboration Critical Success Factors section, all sub-sections are well formed and suggest no changes.
Could not comment on CC Virtual Collaboration Best-Practices section is not developed.
The chart under Hall section, could that be reduced in size to avoid cutting of information?
Overall, I thought you presented a well formed chapter with lots of great information.

It is a great job in terms of enough explanation and details orientation which makes the chapter a good reference. As it is a large chapter I have some suggestion:

- Readers might get lost to follow the chapter. Having a table of content and a clear sectioning can help. Dividing the chapter into some clear and meaningful sections and subsections, helps readers to find answers to their questions as well as following the chapter step by step.
- As it clear, font size and font type need to be consistent all over the chapter.

Conclusion section:
- It seems conclusion is a bit long and includes some new information. I suggest you to shorten the conclusion and explicitly state your points without new information.

I have some general formatting issues, I think the amount of information for this chapter is quite good, however some of it gets lost in the mix of formatting differences throughout the paragraphs. I agree that the sentence structure is sometimes awkward and inconsistent. The various chapters & headings are a bit confusing since they are formatted differently. I’m not quite sure how to read the flow of the narrative when the formatting changes every other paragraph. Cleaning this up and making the topic headers clearer and the paragraphs more consistent will help the flow of information.

Secondly, is it necessary to include first-person perspective in the opening few paragraphs? I would change this to third-person, which I think would sound better (who is the “I” in the overview section?, for example).

Also, I would like to know a bit more about the cultural studies done by Hall, Hofstede, etc and how they have shaped some modern day approaches to cross cultural collaboration and the way companies have approached this differently than they might have in the past.

This chapter cover large array of topic and goes into great depth in most areas. Good Job on this write up. Below are a few things I think you should consider tweaking to make it that much better.

The sentence structure in some areas is a bit awkward in some places making the material difficult to understand.

Virtual Cross-Cultural Collaboration Issues
I would like to have seen the points mentioned here elaborated a bit more by the author. There are great quotes here but there is very little feedback/opinion which I would have liked to read.

Cultural & Intercultural Differences
How do these cultural difference impact Virtual Collaboration?

Overall each section should discuss how that section impact virtual collaboration. In my opinion it would make it flow a little better.

Nice elaborations of cross cultural collaboration topics. The explanation provided in regards to high context and low context cultures and issues dealing with them are well covered. In communication styles section the information has been nicely parsed in to three sub sections. However in the beginning of the communications sections it could have been better if you have started the section with out using the abbreviations. Expanding CCVC to “cross culture virtual collaboration” on this line might help. You could leave other references to CCVC as is.

The contrasts between the four countries US, Mexico, China and Spain have been clearly demonstrated especially for the area of leadership. It was good to see the “Training” section in your document, as this is very critical factor in minimizing the issues that could arises from the cross cultural collaborations. In section “Trompenaars and Hampden-Turner”, it would be nice to see little more elaboration of sub topic on “Individualism vs. Collectivism”. Overall a well orchestrated document.

I think this chapter was concise and easy to read and understand. I think you need to spell out what CCVC is and then acronym it throughout the rest of the document; I was not sure exactly what it meant. I think the group needs to go back and proofread because I found a lot of editing mistakes within the chapter. The one thing I would recommend is to make sure all the fonts match up in size and are the same. As for the intro I believe it was a little bit wordy with the subject words being overly defined and it could be more to the point. I do have a question: why are some sections so in depth (or wordy) with some headings while others are very short? I did like the tables as they had good information and were easy to follow. The individual studies like Hofstede’s could have been incorporated into the body of the paper rather than stand alone sections as this does not show flow or understanding of research based upon the topic. I think you should move the evolving technologies section before the conclusion section. The examples within this chapter were also very intriguing. Remember to fix the CC Virtual Collaboration Best Practices section as it was incomplete at the time of reading this chapter. The conclusion is a fairly well written with good examples and sums up the subject area fairly well.

Interestingly, I have a friend that works for Cisco with firsthand knowledge of the fact that their telepresence system is being adopted more and more by Fortune 100 companies. This technology is basically a corporate version ofSskype or GoToMeeting with a two-way video camera.

I agree and can see both sides of the argument (large vs. small company). I have worked for both a small, privately owned corporation and a Fortune 100 company. And, I can tell you testify to Adnan's statement about larger companies taking much longer to do something. Ultimately, it depends on the organization itself, i.e. whether or not decision-making is vested in lower level employees, but the company culture of whether or not you need 50 "yes" votes to decide on change. Currently, I work for a small company that has certain virtual aspects, and the company is constantly integrating new collaboration tools and ways for employees in different offices to connect and interact with each other.

I agree with you in that larger corporations need more time. I suggested we use the electronic signatures, with security included for protection, and while it was a great idea and had buyoff, it took about a year to implement it. It saved time and money, but there are a lot more layers in the company that have to be considered before making a decision that would affect the company completely. My next suggestion will be mindmeister. We'll see what happens there. It would be great to consider since we have so many meetings, virtual and face-to-face.

I have a different perspective on why big corporations takes longer time to adopt new tools / technologies vs. small organization.

Big corporations first need to make sure that the new tool/technology is something they need in the long run, and it goes with the strategic direction of the company. Whereas a small comany can make the change and reverse it the next day if it doesn't work out. However, for big corporation it is not that easy. They need to analyse it and take serveral things into consideration. It takes a lot of money and resources to implement a change or add a new procedure/process to the organization. That's why it seems like small companies are quicker towards change as compare to big corporation. In fact, virtial collaboration tools are used more in bigger corporation.

One drawback to virtual meetings is the constant static and unknown noises, having the documents visually unclear, and when you have to take notes on a call, people talk faster than a person that types 60 words a minute or they don't get their thoughts completely together before speaking, causing a lot of corrections. But overall, we couldn't do without it.

My company is one that uses virtual meetings in a big way. Even the 4 people in my group live in different locations. We use virtual meetings for staff conferences, meetings of all kinds, etc. We do save a lot because we used to travel to one location and meet face-to-face...and then there was the cost of food and hotel, plus a car rental. This was a huge savings for the company.

In today's corporate world, it seems to me that the bigger companies are actually the ones taking virtual teaming by storm. And if anything, regarding the recession, virtual teams save companies alot of money by providing a high level of efficiency. It can be time-critical to work from a remote location versus flying in from some international country for a meeting that only lasts 20 minutes:)
