Microsoft Office Communication Server 2007:

Microsoft Office Communication Server 2007, OCS 2007, is an enterprise real-time communication server, providing the capability for enterprise instant messaging, presence, file transfer, peer to peer and multiparty voice and video calling, ad hoc and structured conferences and PSTN connectivity. All of these features can be available throughout the organization, between organizations, and with external users on the internet, or standard phone on the PSTN.

OCS 2007 manages all real-time communications including: instant messaging, VoIP, audio and video conferencing. It works with existing tele-communications systems, so business can deploy advanced VoIP and conferencing without having to get rid of current legacy phone networks.

The presence feature is a cool feature of Microsoft unified communications that brings together all the contact information stored in Active Directory with shows all the ways people communicate. With presence, you can if someone is available and contact them with a click using instant messaging, a phone call or a video conference.

A major drawback is OCS’ lack of support for E911, which gives out a caller's physical location during an emergency 911 call. OCS also lacks a fixed-mobile convergence feature that allows users of Wi-Fi-enabled cell phones to make free VoIP calls. The software and license for an enterprise will cost approximately $7,000.
