Wikipedia Encyclopedia Research





The purpose of updating the content in wikipedia is to make use of our knowledge in micro-blogging for organizational usage and improve in

a public encyclopedia page.





After our group research in the definition and elaboration of micro-blogging for organizational usage, we came up with the layout of context for the topic

however, we have engaged to the people in wikipedia community and they suggested that some of our elaboration need further research but they did like our group idea of micro-blogging and organizational usage provide and the issue of micro-blogging. Hence, we edited the wikipedia on those areas of organizational usage and the issues toward micro-blogging. Below is the actual Wikipedia page before and after our modifications. We also posted the actual file of our micro-blogging in word format with a link belowed as wikipedia prototype for our full version of modifications.

What is a Micro Blog?

A Micro-blogging is an emerging form of communication that enables individuals to broadcast information through simple updates to their audience. (Kaushik).  It is “a service with bite-size messages topping out at 140 characters can be smart, useful, maybe even necessary” (Baker). This is anyone who chooses to become a subscriber and follow someone’s posts.  Micro-blogging allows users to share information that they probably wouldn’t through other forms of communication.  These are small little things that happen daily in a person’s life.  This type of information is usually live such as what they are doing, thinking, and experiencing. (Java et al.). Information that they believe is interesting and might also be valuable for others.  They may not bother to share this information with others through other forms of communication, such as through emails, IM, or blogs.  This is because “E-mail no longer serves its proper purpose” (Miller).  “Microblogging is in some ways like instant messaging or text messaging but instead of it taking place one to one, it’s often one to many or many to many” (Strout & Cascio).



Why Micro-blogging for Organizational Use

Micro-blogging is an efficient way for a company “to reach all of its employees quickly and efficiently. E-mail is obviously one way to do this but increasingly, it’s hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. With many folks receiving hundreds of e-mails a day, it can take minutes if not hours before we get to an e-mail from the CEO” (Strout & Cascio).  Thus, micro-blogging is more efficient than e-mail.  Also, it is a good way to manage important files to be “linked to and indexed by conversational tools like microblogs” (Strout & Cascio). 


Micro-blogging offers potential because it can change the way we communicate and collaborative at work.  Micro-blogging could become an important informal communication method at work. This could impact the way we communicate in the business setting and improve collaborative work. The corporate environment needs better use of informal communication among employees. (McFedries). This is because informal communication is critical to collaborative work and organizational success. This is by opportunistic valuable information sharing, common ground, and connectedness. (Whittaker, et al.).


Micro-blogging has the potential to become a new informal communication medium especially for collaborative work.  Over the last few years communication patterns have shifted primarily from face-to-face communication to more online communication in emails, IM, and other tools.  As more collaboration is being done remotely through technology, there are relatively less opportunities for face to face informal conversations. In addition because of time constraints at work due to employee downsizing there is more concern about interruptions along with convenience brought by IM’s and Emails. (Whittaker, et al.). 


Many individuals like sharing the whereabouts and status updates in Micro-blogging.  This highlights micro-blog’s potential to support informal communication among co- workers. The areas where it looks to impact are the informational effects and the social and emotional effects. (Whittaker et al.).  The informational effects include increased opportunistic valuable information sharing, expertise realizing, building and maintaining common ground.  The social and emotional effects are mainly enhancing the feeling of connectedness among co-workers. (Java, et al.).


The Benefits of Micro-blogging


The main benefit of Micro-blogging is it helps informal communication in an organization.  Micro-blogging helps opportunistic valuable information sharing and prompting further informal conversations among co-workers. (Whittaker et al.).  You can learn from each other’s experiences if you’re aware to provide this information.  An employee won’t typically send out an e-mail about something that happens to them, but would be comfortable in posting an update on it.  Micro-blogging helps share work related information and expertise. This can be by colleagues posting link’s to insightful and meaningful business articles. Common ground building can be created by co-worker’s updates and sharing opinions.  Micro-blog also helps develop people’s perceptions of others’ work. “Microblogs provide a good source for the latest information in your industry” if you're following the right people, that is” (Petrovic). By reading a work-related update in a Micro-blogging a colleague can gain insight into how a co-worker and their team think.


The nature of broadcasting and voluntary reading a micro-blog makes it easier for users to broadcast information about themselves that they probably wouldn’t do otherwise. (Whittaker et al.). This technology also fulfills people’s needs of checking others status. Their reading and responding is not demanded. People choose to subscribe based on their interests and reply if they find topics interesting or have something to share.  Another important characteristic of Micro-blogging is that “it's simple and easy to use” (Baker). It makes the communication easy to manage. Some people said they usually check on others updates whenever they get a moment, such as in-between meetings, but not necessarily interrupting their work. In addition it can be used to update others concerning issues at work. Either on projects or more informal work related issues. (Java et al.). 


The Issues with Micro-blogging

The main issues with micro blogging are privacy, security, and integration.  Privacy is a major issue due to the concerns of broadcasting social or work information to everyone who follows their feed.   About security, people are worried about the public seeing possible sensitive work information on public Micro-blogging like Twitter.  Integration is probably the hardest issue to overcome basically because the company and its employees have to adapt Micro-blogging into the corporate culture.  This will take time since companies need to recognize its value before they will embrace.
